What Melanotan II is
Melanotan II is a cyclic analogue of alpha-MSH. The defining property is that it is non-selective across the melanocortin receptor family — it engages several subtypes rather than one, and that breadth is the single most important fact about it.
The melanocortin family is unusually spread out in function: different receptor subtypes sit in pigmentation, energy balance and sexual function. A ligand that hits several of them is therefore studied as a multi-system compound by construction, not by accident.
This is exactly where PT-141 differs. It came out of the same chemistry but is far more selective, which is why the two are not interchangeable despite their shared ancestry.
