What makes SS-31 unusual
Most compounds in this catalogue engage a protein receptor. SS-31 does not: it associates with cardiolipin, a structural phospholipid found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Targeting a lipid rather than a receptor is a genuinely different pharmacological approach.
It is also notable for how it reaches that membrane. Uptake does not depend on membrane potential, which is the inverse of how TPP-conjugated mitochondrial agents work — those rely on charge to accumulate. A compound that does not need the potential to get there behaves differently in exactly the conditions where the potential is compromised.
